This high-altitude (490m) vineyard on decomposed granite with chunks of ironstone and quartz is a jewel of the northern flank of the Adelaide Hills. Say no more, Michael Hall's long-lived Mt Torrens Syrah bottlings are sourced from across the road.
I've been fortunate to work with Mike and Margaret's 1.1 Ha vineyard since 2022. Slowly getting involved in pruning, shoot thinning, leaf plucking and green harvest over the year, over 4 vintages. For me, this has been a unique vineyard from the start: late ripening and low yielding (~1.5 kg grapes/vine), producing aromatic, sweet, spicy and herbal fruit. A vineyard that is capable of producing wines with power and grace. The 2025 vintage is the best wine to encompass the potential of this site to date.
Wine making: The grapes were picked between 8 March and 22 March in three passes. 50% destemmed, 50% with 70% whole cluster ferment, with 54 days of maceration for both. 4% of Sangiovese, Nero d'Avola and Viognier were co-fermented with Syrah. Aged 10 months in old puncheons. The final wine has 30% whole bunch. After carefully assembling the blend, the wine rested in tank for 1 month and was bottled with 30 ppm SO2
Blend composition: 96% Syrah, 2% Nero d’Avola, 1% Sangiovese, 1% Viognier
